11/17 : Soft-opening of the QNL Library
After months of anticipation, Qatar National Library finally opens its doors to the public with the inauguration on November 7.
This ‘soft’ opening means a lot to all stakeholders involved for many years and working hard behind the scenes to get this ready. The soft opening can be seen as an exploratory period before the grand opening in April 2018.
With its 10 000 visitors eager to read the above million-book collection, the ambition of QNL is to become one of the world’s preeminent centres of learning, research and culture.
The library departments are currently testing their onboarding procedures and some are still waiting to receive the remaining collections and items.
Brandfirst was appointed by Qatar Foundation in 2015 to start the design and build of the AV Interactive works. The company managed to seamlessly integrate its systems within the spirit of the building architecture, designed by world-renowned architect Rem Koolhaas.
Brandfirst’s digital systems consist of above 40 interactive media devices, ranging from touchscreens to augmented reality wayfinding kiosks. There are eleven double-sided totems and most notably, four massive media walls that facilitate the quest for information and education.
The applications’ purpose is to serve as a digital guide through the library, assisting visitors in book searches, promoting events, wayfinding and entertainment for children and adults.
The edifice and its interactive assets have been visited by a number of political and diplomatic personalities since its opening such as Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser or the Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.
Please find below some pictures of the building and its facilities. The venue is particularly worth visiting during night time.
